October is a special month, full of opportunities to reflect on the beauty and strength found in our diversity. As we celebrate both Global Diversity Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re reminded of how different perspectives and experiences shape a more inclusive future. These observances push us toward a shared goal: creating an environment where everyone—regardless of their background—can thrive. Embracing diversity and advancing inclusion isn’t just a noble goal; it’s essential for building a workforce and society where all individuals have the opportunity to succeed.
At the USDA, this commitment to inclusion is at the heart of our mission. We’re building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the nation we serve, where every employee feels valued and empowered to bring their whole selves to work. Our efforts to cultivate inclusion extend beyond the walls of our organization. One way we’re advancing this goal is through strategic partnerships with educational institutions that serve underrepresented communities. These collaborations aim to provide students with opportunities to enter public service fields like agriculture and natural resources, thus ensuring that USDA’s workforce reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.
One of the most significant milestones in this effort occurred last week during our first-ever Unity Through Inclusion Summit, where we proudly announced a new partnership with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), a Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution. This partnership is rooted in our shared goal of creating pathways for students from diverse backgrounds to pursue meaningful careers at USDA.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the collaboration with UNCP opens doors for students to explore careers in public service. Specifically, it provides opportunities in agriculture and natural resources, fields where diverse perspectives are critical for addressing complex challenges. By providing these pathways, we’re helping to shape the future of our workforce, ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to USDA’s mission.
The inaugural USDA Unity Through Inclusion Summit was more than just an event; it was a powerful statement about our ongoing commitment to diversity and advancing inclusion. The summit began with a traditional smudging ceremony led by the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, setting a tone of respect, unity, and shared purpose. The two-day summit included discussions on topics like the power of inclusion, allyship, neuroinclusion, and disability employment practices. These conversations highlighted how embracing diversity strengthens our workforce and enhances our ability to serve the public effectively.
As Cassondra Searight, Deputy Director of Strategy and Policy at the Office of the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, noted, “The MOU with UNCP signifies a major step in USDA’s commitment to expanding opportunities for underserved communities. We’re investing in the next generation of leaders who will drive innovation in agriculture and natural resources.”
UNCP Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings, MD, echoed this sentiment, saying, “We’re excited to partner with USDA to create new opportunities for our students to explore and pursue careers in agriculture. This partnership ensures our students can reach their full potential.”
This partnership with UNCP is an excellent example of how USDA is fostering inclusion, but it’s only the beginning. We’ve also made strides through other initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for underrepresented communities. For example, USDA recently announced a new cadre of Tribal College Liaisons, who will serve as resources and advocates for students at Tribal Colleges and Universities. Additionally, we’ve opened applications for next summer’s Tribal Policy Internships, offering more chances for Native American students to gain valuable experience and contribute to USDA’s mission.
These initiatives are part of our broader strategy to break down barriers, create opportunities, and build a future that reflects the diversity of our nation. As we continue to work toward these goals, we’re reminded that diversity is not just about representation—it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels included, empowered, and valued. By advancing inclusion, we’re building a stronger, more innovative workforce, capable of addressing the challenges and opportunities of the future.
At USDA, we understand that the strength of our organization lies in our people. By fostering a culture of inclusion, we ensure that our employees are empowered to bring their best selves to work every day. Whether through partnerships like the MOU with UNCP, or initiatives like the Tribal Policy Internships, we’re committed to creating opportunities that allow individuals from all backgrounds to thrive.
As we celebrate Global Diversity Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we recognize the importance of continuing this work. Let’s keep building on the progress we’ve made—together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
