North Carolina Teen with Autism Shines on Yancey Court

YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Tuesday night at Mountain Heritage High School in Yancey County, fans were treated to an extra special senior night that will long be remembered.

Mason Hughes, a high school basketball manager for the Cougars varsity boys basketball team, has autism and typically serves as a manager during the games, overseeing various tasks on the sidelines. He is a key part of the team, supporting his teammates and keeping the game running smoothly behind the scenes.

“A normal basketball game is me not playing,” Mason told News 13 the next day — on Wednesday, Feb. 14. But Tuesday night was different. “Yes, totally,” he said. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as Mason transitioned from the manager role to a player, and he showed the crowd just what he could do. After walking as part of senior night festivities, Mason Hughes the manager became Mason Hughes the superstar, captivating everyone in the gym with his unexpected skills.

“And then like (I) hit a three-pointer a little bit after that, stole the ball and then shot a three and then I got fouled and I got two foul shots, air-balled both of them, but then I hit a half-court (shot),” Mason said, reflecting on his performance. The crowd erupted with joy at every move, cheering him on as he took the court with enthusiasm and a big smile.

The two-minute exhibition against Draughn High School had been planned for two weeks, though Mason only found out about it the night before. It was a surprise that added to the thrill of the moment, and the entire gym buzzed with excitement as Mason made his way onto the court for his time to shine.

His mom, Gayla, was in the stands, watching the extraordinary event unfold before her eyes. She described the feeling of seeing Mason’s success firsthand. “He just did that shot and the crowd went wild,” she said. “There was like a big roar in the gym. It was amazing to see how many people love him and are pulling for him that I was not even aware of.”

In the midst of all the excitement, Mason shared how he felt. “Well I mean I was excited, but was I nervous? I don’t think so,” he said with a grin, clearly comfortable in the spotlight and enjoying every moment of it. His easygoing demeanor and confidence helped make the event even more memorable.

Barry Johnson, who coaches the boys team, spoke to Mason’s integral role with the team and the impact his attitude has on everyone around him. “He’s just full of joy, always sees the best in everything,” said Gayla, reflecting on her son’s positive outlook. “He always sees the best in all the people.”

Mason’s love for basketball began around seven years ago, when he started getting into the sport after initially struggling with a dislike of balls during physical therapy aimed at strengthening his hands. It was a challenge, but Mason pushed through, showing resilience and determination. “He was just very, very happy, very proud he got to actually play ball,” Gayla said with pride. “It’s just amazing, no words.”

In the years since, Mason’s passion for the game has only grown. His transformation from manager to player is a testament to his dedication, as well as the support and encouragement he receives from his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Mountain Heritage community. The night showcased more than just his basketball skills — it demonstrated the power of inclusion, love, and support that can make every individual feel valued and celebrated.
