There’s a special place in Eastern North Carolina where life-changing work is being done for individuals with autism. At Aces for Autism, families on the spectrum are discovering a transformative autism facility dedicated to helping children reach their full potential.
If you or someone you love is living with autism, you’ve likely heard of Aces for Autism. This center offers more than just hope—it provides a pathway to greater independence for many individuals. As you walk through the doors, you’ll find a team of dedicated and trained professionals helping children with autism reach new milestones every day.
One of these professionals, Angela Thomas, shares an inspiring story: “He just spelled his name for the first time, which is the first time he’s done that by himself.”
For children who face social challenges, are non-verbal, or are simply learning how to become more independent, this autism facility offers a lifeline. The 32,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders, providing children with the tools they need to succeed.
None of this would have been possible without the passion and personal experience of one family. Ten years ago, Bobbie and Kyle Robinson co-founded Aces for Autism after navigating the struggles of raising their son Samuel, who is on the spectrum. For years, they had to travel to the Piedmont Triad to find the specialized care their son needed. But now, families in Eastern North Carolina no longer have to make those journeys. The care they need is right here in their community.
Today, Samuel Robinson starts his mornings in one of the facility’s innovative learning labs, designed to simulate real-life settings like apartments. These labs provide an essential environment for children to learn crucial life skills. Samuel, for instance, is working on becoming more independent: “Being able to wake up with an alarm clock, being able to get up and actually make his bed is something that’s really exciting for him to be able to do independently.”
The center’s commitment to developing independence doesn’t stop there. Other learning labs are tailored to help children get comfortable with various settings they’ll encounter in the real world, such as dentist offices, doctors’ clinics, grocery stores, and hair salons. This preparation helps ease transitions into everyday life outside the facility.
The center’s outdoor playground is equipped with a communication board specifically designed for non-verbal children. This board provides an essential tool for children who may struggle to express their needs, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.
In the classrooms, the 1-to-1 instruction model ensures that each child receives personalized attention, helping them meet their educational goals. The team at Aces for Autism believes that while autism may be a diagnosis, it doesn’t define who a person is. One of the staff members passionately states: “Autism is a diagnosis, but it doesn’t change who the person is on the inside. That’s what I believe.”
Through its combination of specialized learning environments, individualized instruction, and a dedicated team, Aces for Autism is shaping the future for many children. This autism facility stands as a beacon of hope, ensuring that families no longer need to travel far for the quality care their children deserve. Here, children are not only supported but are empowered to achieve their fullest potential, one step at a time.
